In April 2001, a new reform of national education curriculum launched with the appearing of Course Reform of the Fundamental Education Outline(the trial version)established by the Education Department. At the same year, primary school set up English course from grade three. Following the policy, different kinds of textbooks come into the market. However, the quality of these textbooks is verified from low level to high level. For this reason, it is necessary to make an overall comparison and evaluation among different textbooks so that teachers and students can make full use of their textbooks.This thesis chooses two versions of primary school English textbooks as the study objects, they are PEP primary English published by People’s Education Press and New Standard English published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, to compare their compilation quality on the theoretical basis of five teaching objectives of National English Curriculum. After the static and dynamic comparison and evaluation,some characteristics of two versions are found as follows:First, both versions of textbooks are designed on the basis of National English Curriculum and followed the idea of topic as the main line, communication function as orientation, language structure as subordination and task as specific objective.Second, both versions of textbooks have their own characteristics.Third, in the light of publishing, the price of PEP is 1.1 to 2.4 yuan higher than New Standard English. But the supporting materials of New Standard English are more abundant and it launches a popularly welcomed electronic point of reading.Forth, as for the designing style, New Standard English has thin and light books,bright colors and humorous cartoon figures.Fifth, in the language use, both versions of textbooks present authentic and pragmatic language to students.Teachers’ general impression to PEP is higher than New Standard English. Most of them think PEP is more suitable to their students in accordance with their learning level.Also, PEP is more widely used in Ganzhou district. However, some teachers agree that New Standard English is good and scientific with its own strong characteristics. As longas teachers use it correctly and reasonably, students can benefit more from it.At the end of this thesis, some suggestions about how to using textbook more effectively are given to help English teachers...
