China is a major tea producing country, but is also the birthplace of tea. There are many typesof teas, basically can be classified into six categories, namely: green tea, black tea, white tea,post-fermented tea and yellow tea. Although tea was first made in China, prospered in Asia andfinally spread all over the world. Nowadays tea has become one of the three major non-alcoholicdrinks. Tea is quite popular in the world and more than50%of the world’s population has the habitof drinking teas. In domestic market, the tea industry has undergone adjustments constantly inorder to adapt the change of market structure. Zhejiang province in China is the major teaproducing area, which has been required to follow the guidance of the policy of expandingdomestic demand, reflecting the advantages of tea industry, such as, characteristic agriculture andindustrial upgrading. As a result, tea industry should improve its competitiveness in the domesticmarket.The main aim of this dissertation is to introduce the related situation of tea industry, thenanalyze the important points about the tea industry’s competitiveness and give the indication ofresearch at home and abroad. Regarding four aspects of production scale, structure, area andtechnology, the present development of Zhejiang tea industry has been studied. In the light ofresearch methodology, the theory of comparative advantages, PEST analysis and porter’s fivemodels have been used to implement the concrete analysis for industry competitiveness, whichunveils the related determinants that have the power to affect their competitive advantages. Finally,in order to improve the competitiveness of tea industry in Zhejiang province, the correspondingsuggestions and countermeasures have been pointed out in this paper. As a major tea producingarea, this paper argues that Zhejiang’s tea industry development needs more improvements. Theauthorities in China should provide more robust supports, such as corresponding policy aid, at thesame time; the tea industry development also should be involved in the forefront of the nationalscientific and technological innovation. It is quite necessary for our tea producers to improve thelabor efficiency and reduce the enterprise’s labor cost using optimized tea-picking process and soon. Also, in view of tea industry’s structure, we should vigorously develop the pattern of "leadingenterprises+base+peasant household" and desert “small-scale peasant economy”. In addition,our government also needs to give strong supports for tea culture, tea tourism, tea beverages andtea food related industry. In conclusion, Zhejiang province will apparently strengthen the corecompetitiveness of tea industry by unrelenting efforts.
