In recent years, more and more overseas students return to their motherland for job-hunting. It shows that China is now facing a huge "brain gain". Studying the employment of those returned brain is essential for better using of their talents. This paper aims to analyze gender differences and its factors in the employment of returned overseas students in Shanghai. By using the data from a research conducted in2011in Shanghai, this paper compares the gender differences in4parts,1)labor participation rate, employment rate and unemployment rate,2)employment structure, including industry structure and occupational structure,3)professional achievements,4) employment difficulties. After that, this paper builds two logistic models, one for unemployment difference and the other for occupational difference. By using the quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, this paper tries to conclude why the gender differences and how to narrow it down. This paper finds that female returned students are in a weak position in employment compared to male. They have lower labor participation rate and employment rate, while higher unemployment rate. Industrial and occupational segregation is quite obvious, the female are more likely to be in lower occupations. It’s more difficulty for the female to get professional achievements and other awards. A higher proportion of the female meet employment difficulties. Through logistic analysis, this research finds that age, education background have significant influences on their unemployment odds, while age, education background, hukou status, district and industry have significant influences on their occupational odds. Combining quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, this paper concludes that gender differences in employment result from biological factors, adverse selection, gender factors and economic factors. Adverse selection is rarely mentioned in previous research. It concludes that the male overseas students are burdened with more economic responsibilities, those choose and succeed to work in Shanghai must be excellent, while the female meet with less economic responsibilities, and they can use marriage for a buffer.
