As an essential tool for power grid operation and management, pumped storage power station (PSPS) is very important for power grid. In recent years, many PSPSs have been put into operation, and a large number of PSPSs are under building. However there are some wrong understandings about PSPS, such as function orientation, narrow investment channel, the defective price-mechanism. These problems seriously hinder the development of PSPS. In order to solve these problems, we should research the function and importance of PSPS comprehensively and fundamentally.The thesis first studies the function of PSPS, and proposes the concept of "functional benefit". Then the thesis build a set of index system for evaluating PSPS’s economic benefit from three aspects of national economic evaluation, plant financial benefit and functional benefit.In order to obtain reasonable evaluation result, the thesis researches some commonly used comprehensive evaluation methods, analyses the characteristics and applicable occasions of various methods. Finally the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method (FCEM) is selected to construct the overall mode architecture, and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is chosen to determine the weight of each index. The traditional AHP establishes judgment matrix under the nine scales principle, which is very easy to make the decision-maker feel contradiction and confusion. This thesis applied a kind of improved analytic hierarchy process (IAHP) that uses the three scales principle. A full set of steps of the IAHP is introduced. All evaluation indexes should be transformed into the same evaluation scale. In the FCEM framework, the thesis presents the methods to calculate the membership degree of quantitative indicators and qualitative indicators. Especially, the thesis discusses the membership function distribution for three kinds of quantitative index, including positive quantitative index, negative quantitative index and middle quantitative indicators.According to the research above, the thesis establishes a comprehensive model for economic benefit evaluation on the base of FCEM principle. The model is applied to evaluate economic benefit of Jiangxi Hongping pumped storage power station. The thesis also applies the evaluation model to study economic benefit among some different PSPSs, which will help decision-maker to choose the appropriate PSPS to provide support.
