Research On The Method Of Identifying Industrial Generic Technology Based On Patent Analysis

With the rapid development of economic globalization, the internationalcompetition is increasingly fierce, that accelerated growth of demand of newtechnologies in the world. As the basis in the technology innovation chain, theresearch of generic technology has attracted lots of attention. Many countries aresupporting the research and development of industrial generic technology，andregarding it as an important part of science and technology policy. They also makerelevant science and technology plan to implement policy. But we lack of unifieddefinition and appropriate identifying method for a long time. It will not only affectthe allocation of national limited scientific and technological resources, but alsorestrict the rapid development of other industries. Therefore, how to identify generictechnology is currently a serious problem to be solved.Based on the advantages of patent documents, such as rich information included,standard document format, getting data easily, the paper has integrated a variety ofpatent analysis methods to build the framework to identify industrial generictechnologies. Firstly, we give the definition of generic technologies. It is consideredas one of the basic technologies in the industry, and can be widely applied in manyother fields. What’s more, it should contain a certain economic value. Secondly, weidentify three characteristics above step by step according to the definition of generictechnology. The completed methods are as the following. We respectively build theco-occurrence matrixes of Derwent Manual Code and keywords to recognizeimportant Derwent Manual Code and keywords represented basic properties of thetarget industries, so that we can get the basic technology. Then, we use patent citationto analyze development path of selected technology. We can get the technologyevolution and the change of patent assignees, whereby we know whether it has beenapplied or will be applied in many fields. It means we can know whether it has a widerange of applications. Next we use technology life cycle and valuable patent familyquantitative to evaluate analysis its economic value. In a word, we defined thetechnology as generic technology, who is regarded as fundamental technology in theindustrial, applied in several fields, and containing economical value. Finally,according to patent strategy matrix, we analyze important companies in the industry,and try to make relevant policy recommendations.We use the evaluation framework to analyze the lithium-ion batteries industry. Itshows that the production of lithium iron phosphate anode is one of the generic technology of lithium-ion batteries technology. It confirms that the framework isscientific and feasible. It also provides new ideas and methods to evaluate generictechnology.
