At present, China is in the period of rapid advancement of urbanization, when a prominentfeature of China’s regional economic development is the emergence of urban agglomeration. Aproper and orderly spatial organization is very important to improve efficiency. Various ofresearches have been made to explore how to build a proper and orderly spatial organization. Butmost of researches focused on urban size rather than empirical analysis between the spatialstructure of urban agglomerations and the economic effect. In view of this, this thesis will dealwith this subject with the case of Chinese ten top urban agglomerations.Firstly, the meaning of urban agglomerations and correlative concepts are distinguished inthe thesis. Secondly, the thesis will depict the evolution and the present situation of Chinese tentop urban agglomerations with six indices: Zipf index, urban primacy, population, populationdensity, economic density, then evaluate the economic effect of urban agglomerations from theprospective of labor productivity and total factor productivity. Finally, construct a model to makeempirical test with the with Cobb-Douglas function. The results suggest that the population, population density, economic density and economiclinkage of Chinese ten top urban agglomerations have been strengthened in recent years. Zipfindex and city primacy have positive and negative effect to economic effect respectively, whichalso depend on the population of urban agglomerations.
