Nowadays, business faces the heavy competition on the category of quality, cost andefficiency. The globalization of economic and information has changed the way of businessitself and the customers. The old ways have been difficult for businesses to have a goodcompetitiveness in the fierce market, how to win customers, how to win orders, how to createmore profit is very important to survive and develop of every business. Today’s competitivebusiness environment requires fewer defects, lower failure costs, faster response and morehigh customer satisfaction, so the business needs a new scientific method can effectivelysolve the problem. Six Sigma DMAIC method is an effective method to do the improvementon manufacturing, services and work process.T company is a large foreign company. Itsdeveloped headquarter is in Japan. V product is a drive component in HDD,referred to VCM,.VCM is critical components of traditional mechanical hard disk.it provides a constantmagnetic field for rotating the head arm in HDD. The assembly process of VCM is notcomplicated, but requires a high degree of product cleanliness, the less particle the cleanlinessquality is better for individual product, because particle will cause the HDD fail, so theparticle level is very critical factor in VCM quality. But more difficult to control it. Thecustomer complained the particle level is worse than T company’s competitor, customerrequested to improve the particle for V product. At the same time, particle failure causedintenral quality cost such as rework.In this article, as VCM quality improvement for example, use Six Sigma DMAIC method,tools for products and product-related processes, in-depth and detailed analysis to researchand identify the various factors that influence the particles, find key factors by statisticalmethods such as brain strom, fish born,C&E matrix,FMEA,MSA,DOE and so on. Finally findout the solution to improve particle quality, to reduce the internal quality failure and externalquality failureAfter six sigmap project, the particle level dropped to22K from44K, fully meet theimprovement goals.The particle DPPM of T company internal dropped to320from previous7200,which effectively reducing the internal quality loss. Meanwhile, through theimplementation of Six Sigma projects,engineer have in-depth understanding of the of the SixSigma methodology. The team joined in the improvement activities, which results newconcept, strong control and implmenatation.
