Container rail-water transport is an important form of container multimodal transport. Whether the multimodal transport operates coordinately exerts great influence on the efficiency of the entire transport system as well as the cost of it. In this thesis, different types of multimodal container transport are studied from the perspective of infrastructure layout, transport organization, operating processes and document circulation. In particular, solutions for a smoothly connected and coordinated container rail-water transport system are provided. The solutions are presented from four aspects. Through analyzing problems occurred in the practical multimodal rail-water container transport, this article proposes solutions accordingly with the help of theories in this field. The study falls in four steps:First, it reviews the course of development of six container rail-water multimodal ports in the past four years, which gives a glimpse of the current situation of China’s intermodal container transport. Then there comes a comparative analysis between China’s intermodal transport and that in some developed countries.Secondly, it elaborates the definition and features of the container rail-water multimodal transports, and then argues the necessity of container rail-water transport development as well as the existing problems in this field. Through the analysis of the different products, transaction process and documents circulation of container rail-water transport, this paper identifies the key problem hindering the smooth cooperation of the rail-water transport system and then puts forward solutions.Thirdly, the study illustrates the types of container rail-water transport as well as problems related to consignment organization, and then directs at key problems causing malpractice of the transport system, such as lack of infrastructure, bad transport organization, slow information exchange, and inefficient management of the authorities.Last but not least, through a case study on Chengxiang- Wanzhou container water-rail multimodal transport, the operation of the container rail-water multimodal transport in the direction of Chengxiang-Wanzhou-Shanghai is elaborated in detail. Basing on the case, relevant optimized suggestions on such transport system are brought forward.
