A Research On The Impacts Of Openness On Innovation Performance:Analysis Of The Moderating Effects Of Open Innovation Capacities

As the emergence and development of open innovation, a large number of firms realize that depending solely on the internal and limited resources and knowledge isn’t far more enough in the process of innovation, which isn’t contribute to figure out the unprecedented difficulties in the process of innovation and the complicated and fluctuating environment of operation. And then in order to exist and develop for a long term in the fiercely competitive environment, companies are supposed to absorb and integrate the advantages of external resources and knowledge constantly. Although enterprises continue to emphasize the importance of the. openness of organizational boundaries, how to manage the activities in open innovation and what capacities are needed in the process of opening innovational activities, which are. helpful to improve the performance of innovation, and these are huge challenges in the practice of open innovation to firms. It means that on the one aspect, companies face with the choice of openness, because the over-high and under-low openness is harmful to exploit the advantages of open innovation, on the other aspect, firms also face to cultivate the open innovation capacities, since lacking of these abilities is not conducive to utilize the internal and external resources efficiently. While openness and open innovation capacities has been a hot issue and a difficult problem in the field of open innovation, researchers usually study open innovation and its impact on innovation performance from a single perspective of openness or open innovation capacities, which ignores the objective connections between openness and open innovation capacities. Since open innovation capacities are the precondition to the appropriate choice of openness, eventually improving the innovation performance of firms. So analyzing the relationship between openness and innovation performance based on the perspective of open innovation capacities is necessary to study.Based on this, on the basis of previous researches, this paper clarifies the connections between openness and open innovation capacities via reviewing literature, and then builds a model of the significant impacts of openness and open innovation capacities on innovation performance, which play the moderating effects of open innovation capacities on high priority. Then selecting the firms in Northeast China as the samples to collect200valid questionnaires as the data, this paper uses the software, SPSS19.0, Simplified Chinese Version, to analyze the data. And in order to validate the interactive model, this paper testes all the research hypotheses. At last, by summarizing the test results, this paper gets some following conclusions:(1) Open innovation should contains openness and open innovation capacities. In the implementation of open innovation, enterprises not only have to choose proper openness, but also have to develop relevant open innovation capacities. And the coordinated development of both can solve the problems which a single one faces.(2) Openness is consisted of two dimensions, breadth and depth, and these two dimensions are correlative, and respectively have a significant positive impact on innovation performance.(3) Open innovation capacities includes six dimensions, inventive capacity, transformative capacity, innovative capacity, absorptive capacity, connective capacity, desorptive capacity, and in addition to desorptive capacity, other capacities have a significant positive influence on innovation performance.(4) Open innovation capacities can adjust the relationship between openness and innovation performance. At the condition of higher Open innovation capacities, the effects of openness on innovation performance are more remarkable and intensive. Inventive capacity can positively regulate the relationship between the depth of openness and innovation performance, transformative capacity can positively adjust the relationship between the breadth of openness and innovation performance. But desorptive capacity can’t regulate the relationship between openness and innovation performance, innovative capacity, absorptive capacity and connective capacity all can adjust the relationship.(5) The measurement of openness should be conducted from two dimensions, relation and process, and in this way this paper does well. The measurement of open innovation capacities in this paper performs well.Finally, by combining openness and open innovation capacities to research, this paper not only makes up for the previous isolated study, but enriches the theoretical research of open innovation, and clarifies the mechanism in the process of openness and open innovation capacities influencing on innovation performance, which can instruct firms to efficiently conduct open innovation.
