| Urban rail transit plays important role in relieving the traffic congestion in mega and big cities, improving intensive land use, protecting urban environment, promoting urban economic development and improving life quality of city residents. Many metropolitan cities such as London, Paris, Tokyo, New York, and Hong Kong have developed comprehensive urban rail network as the backbone of their passenger traffic system.Rail transit operation in mainland China initiated much behind western countries. Until1990s the increasing pressure of traffic jams in mega cities as a result of rapid urbanizations and the promoted urban financial resources from the continuous rapid growth of economy spurred the needs for the rail transit systems.At present China becomes the fastest market of urban rail development worldwide. As the growing industry, rail transit has directly driven the relevant industries of raw material, equipment and machinery manufacturing, engineering construction, technology development and innovations, consultancy services, E&M system integration, education and training, construction project management and operation services, energy efficiency, environmental protection etc. The enterprises in the industry benefit from the rapid expansion of the industry scale and the promoting of the technology and production capacity.Based on the data analysis of the industry development and current situation, applying the theories of value chain, the thesis builds up the life cycle value chain of urban rail transit industry and the value chain of engineering consultancy business. It predicts the long term industrial scale as well as the one during the period of2011to2015from the trend of the two key factors which are demand and capability, analyses the evolving tendency of value migration in geographic and longitudinal dimensions in industrial value chain, and identifies the current mode and evolving directions of the value chain governance for both urban rail transit industry and engineering consultancy business. Combining the above study and industrial upgrading theory, STEDI’s strategic role in urban rail industry and upgrading paths during the period of2011to2015are discussed. With the accomplishments of the thesis, new approaches are provided and insights are obtained on study of Urban Rail Transit industry, applied scope and terms of value chain theories are extended and innovative tools and models are developed, thus the thesis may be referred as the guidance of understanding the evolution of urban rail transit industry and consultancy business in mainland China, indentifying the development trends and business opportunities for government authorities, industry associations and enterprises. |
