Due to the economic crisis in recent years, competitions between manufacturing enterprises become fiercer. Many Chinese enterprises have made great efforts to cut down marketing costs and material consumptio, and save labor cost to improve competitiveness. However, since products between enterprises are increasingly homogenized, product cost and profit are increasingly open to the market, all these methods for competitiveness improvement have been greatly constrained. Thus, enterprises are gradually turning to the "Third Profit Source—logistics cost, and seek to gain competitive advantage throught the reduction of. logistics costs.The reduction of logistics cost within the enterprise is one of the important methods of reducing logistics cost, especially the production logistics costs, which is mainly about facility layout improvement and optimization, including two aspects of the overall arrangement and workshop layout. Workshop layout directly affects the improvement and efficiency of overall enterprise production organization pattern. Good, scientific workshop layout makes positive impact on the logistics efficiency, the utilization rate of equipments, safety management and production balance. Therefore, examination of the optimization of workshop layout in enterprises has great theoretical and practical significance.Beijing Power Equipment Group Co. Ltd. is a state-owned manufacturing enterprise with ZGM Coal Mill as its main product.. This paper mainly studies how to optimize its product assembly workshop layout to help it reduce logistics costs and improve competitiveness. Firstly, the present logistics condition of product assembly workshop in BPEG is analyzed by the employing F-D graph, logistics intension table and related methods, and workshop layout problems are identified. Secondly, according to system layout planning method (SLP), logistics, non-logistics, combined three relations analysis and location lines plan are used to provide three improvement projects of workshop facility layout. Thirdly the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to evaluate three improvement projects and the optimal improvement project of the workshop are concluded. This research has also important reference value for other manufacturing enterprises.
