In 2008, China telecommunications industry completed restructuring, the original six basic operators merged into three basic operators while issued 3G licenses, which meant China’s telecommunications industry officially entered the age of 3G from 2G. While 3G business is still in the development stage, the issuance of 4G licenses in the end of the year 2013 has pulled China’s telecommunications industry into the age of 4G. The arrivals of 3G and 4G era break the competition pattern in the age of 2G, traditional voice service is surely affected, operator’s main business and business models have changed a lot, the competition is even more intense within the industry. In the new generation of mobile communications era, how to enhance their competitive advantage has been an issue urgently concerned and need to be solved by telecommunications enterprises.Based on the theory of competitive advantage, and combined with the basic features of the telecommunications industry, this paper studies telecommunications enterprises’ competitive advantage and their source respectively in the age of 2G and 3G. With the results of the research and current development of the telecommunications industry in 4G, some possible strategies and recommendations will be proposed on how to enhance the competitiveness of telecommunication operators and how this industry will develop in the future.Firstly, on the basis of theoretical research, analyze the concept and the source of competitive advantage.Secondly, according to the telecommunications industry’s services and business models in the era of 2G and 3G, and referring to the studies on evaluation of enterprise’s and telecommunications enterprise’s competitive advantage, we respectively build telecommunications enterprise’s competitive advantage evaluation system in the age of 2G and 3G, which includes three dimensions of competitive position, profitability, and sustainability. Then establish telecommunications operators’ competitiveness model, and through empirical research, we can get their competitive advantage and the source.Finally, combine the result of data analysis and the present situation of telecommunications industry, propose some suggestions to enhance telecommunications operators’ competitive advantage as the reference.
