With the reform and opening up of China, the import and export have been developing through the years, they have made outstanding contributions to national economic development and people’s living standard. At the same time, the urbanization has also developed a lot and is rising steadily. Recent years, the construction of the urban has become an important driving force for our country’s economic and social development. The government has attached great importance to the development of the urbanization, especially it has been mentioned seven times in the report of the 18 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The Communist Party’s 18 report has made a point that we should adhere to the new urbanization with Chinese characteristics.Urbanization development in China is affected by multiple factors, it is important to research the factors of urbanization development on China’s urbanization development and economic and social development. Based on the realistic background, the article discusses whether the import and export trade affect the development of the urbanization. Firstly, the related theories of urbanization and foreign trade are introduced, followed by the analysis on theoretical path of the import and export trade affect urbanization. Then this paper analyzes the development situation of the foreign trade and urbanization, especially the level of urbanization uses the urbanization comprehensive index of each region based on the factor analysis. In the empirical part, it adopts the panel data analysis included 30 provinces in China during 2002-2012. In conclusion, export trade promotes the development of urbanization from nationwide, and import trade inhibits the development of urbanization from nationwide. If the country is divided into east, central and west three regions, the import and export trade’s impact for urbanization would be different with different region. Finally, based on the theoretical and empirical analysis, the article put forward some relative policy recommendations.
