Small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) are of significantly importance to the economic development, thus accounting for a great part in the world economy. SMEs are important power in promoting social and economic development both in developed countries and developing countries from worldwide. SMEs are the undertaker of technology innovation so that they have become the new driving force of economic development. SMEs have been increasingly important in promoting economic growth, creating jobs, optimizing resource allocation and accelerating scientific and technological innovation. So to develop SMEs have already become the common view of the governments from most countries in the world. The study on the development patterns of domestic and foreign SMEs contributes to both the SMEs and governments in choosing development patterns and making relevant policies.Enterprise Ecology is a new multidisciplinary, usually it is used to study on the relation of enterprise development and its corporate environment. It has become increasingly important in economic and social research as its wider applications in different fields. This article mainly does research on development and evolution of the enterprises and is based on enterprise ecology and its relevance theory.This article firstly gives a summary about overseas and domestic SMEs’ development and regulatory policy study, and presents the ecological theory, corporate gene, organization niche and organization evolution. Then it describes the development patterns of SMEs in USA, Japan, Italy and China, and groups the development patterns into three categories based on organization niche theory. For the next chapter, corporate gene are consisted of organization structure, enterprise system, corporate culture and entrepreneurship, by using the concept of biological DNA, this article has built a corporate gene structure which expresses the whole process of replication and transcription of DNA&RNA. Based on the analysis of corporate gene and niche factors, this article then describes the in-generation growth and the intergeneration evolution, afterwards builds a system dynamics model using the system dynamics theory. After that, it conducts an ecological study on two cases of SMEs which are selected from Japan and China. Finally, it comes with an ecological solution and suggestion including enhance cooperation, niche separation, co-evolution through analyzing the model and the cases.
