Economic globalization and technological progress make the business environment more open and more complex. In this complex open environment, just considering themselves is not enough for companies. They must begin to build business models with the function of sharing value, thus forming a tightly bound and healthy business ecosystem with huge development potential. Business ecosystem consists of core enterprise, extended companies and other connected social organizations. In business ecosystem, the core enterprise provides a platform, develops a reasonable value sharing mechanism, and expands the final product or service market. Then they attract other companies joining this business ecosystem with low cost or free. Ultimately the whole system will be healthy and develop rapidly. In this paper, active business ecosystem refers to the relatively tight business ecosystem which core enterprise builds through a conscious choice to the member companies. In active business ecosystem, core enterprise can attract and select the members which benefit the development of the business ecosystem. Core enterprise provides available resource platform for these members, improving productivity and stability of the entire business ecosystem and stimulating business innovation effectively.Active business ecosystem was seen as a network in this article. It presented two dimensions of active business ecosystem classification innovatively from the perspective of network. The dimensions were the number of member companies and the complementarities between core enterprise and other members. According to the dimensions, the classification system of active business ecosystem was constructed, including simple-strong complementary type, simple-weak complementary type, complex-strong complementary type and complex-weak complementary type. Meanwhile, customer size and customer stickiness were two indicators to measure effectiveness of active business ecosystem from the perspective of ultimate customer, considering the attraction to final customers and the customers’profile reliance. Then, three typical cases, Wanda, T-Mall and Suning, were selected to analysis the complementarities and effectiveness of the business ecosystem. Finally, the strategies of how to construct active business ecosystem was also proposed at the end of this paper.
