Since May of 2008, cross-Strait relations have seen a historical turning point and cross-Strait tourism has made significant progress. In July of 2008, the first tourist group of Chinese mainlanders arrived in Taiwan, starting the trend of traveling to Taiwan. The opening-up of self-guided tour for mainland residents to Taiwan in June of 2011 promotes the development of the cross-Strait tourism. And mainlanders traveling to Taiwan become an important way of cross-Strait communication, and its impact upon Taiwan economy, society and politics become obvious. In the perspective of tourism politics, the thesis combines the theory on intergroup trust and the theory on tourism and peace. Based on concluding the development of cross Strait tourism, the thesis will analyze the combined effect on cross-Straits relations made by mainlanders traveling to Taiwan, and reflect the shortcomings as well.Cross-Straits tourism, especially the mainlanders traveling to Taiwan, provide a stage for people from both side to interaction and communicate with each other directly, which will enhance the common recognition and understanding. On the one hand, the mainland residents traveling to Taiwan have positive impact upon Taiwan and cross-Strait relations. Firstly, it stimulates the development of Taiwan economy, creates employment opportunities, and promotes cooperation on tourism from both sides. Secondly, it creates opportunities of two-way interaction for people from both sides, and facilitates the cross-Strait social integration and cultural integration. Thirdly, it accelerates the cross-Strait institutional construction, improves the recognition of Taiwan people on the policy of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and strengthens the influence of cross-Strait topic on Taiwan. On the other hand, it brings negative impact as well. The tourism market grows too fast, the quality of mainland travelers need to be improved, and attention on “Taiwan recognition” need to be increased. Above all, the conclusion of the thesis is that the mainlanders traveling to Taiwan is benefit for the healthy and steady development of cross-Strait relations.
