Recently, with rapid urbanization and industrialization in Shaanxi Province, the demand for construction land persistently increases, intensifying the predominant contradiction between human and land. The traditional development mode for construction land, i.e., the extensive, blind and irrational expansion, has difficulties to continue. Thus, transforming the construction land use mode to the intensive land use mode and digging the potential become the necessary path for the sustainable urban development.By analyzing the current situation of the urban construction land use in Shaanxi Province, this paper constructs the trend analysis index system for the urban construction land use and the economical and intensive land use evaluation index system. Based on the built systems, the paper evaluates the construction land use trend and the economical and intensive land use degree in the main urban areas of the prefectural-level cities in Shaanxi Province, aiming to guide the intensive urban construction land use of Shaanxi Province, alleviate the shortage of urban construction land, and advance the healthy development of the new-type urbanization.The main conclusions of the study are as follows.This paper constructs the trend analysis index system for the urban construction land use and the economical and intensive land use evaluation index system for the main urban areas of the prefectural-level cities in Shaanxi Province.The trend analysis index system for the urban construction land use encompasses three indexes, i.e. the land use elasticity index, the contribution comparison index and the environmental performance index, and 7 sub-indexes. The economical and intensive land use evaluation index system includes the land use intensity index, the growth-induced land consumption index, the land use elasticity index, and the environmental performance index, and 7 sub-indexes.The inefficient expansion or the intensive expansion forms the primary construction land use trend for all the main urban areas of the prefectural-level cities in Shaanxi Province.Overall, the urban land use trend in Northern Shaanxi is better than Southern Shaanxi and Guanzhong area. From the perspective of demographic and economic development, the urban land use trend in Guanzhong area is better than Southern Shaanxi area. From the perspective of environmental improvement, the urban land use trend in Southern Shaanxi area is better than Guanzhong area.Among all the main urban areas of the prefectural-level cities in Shaanxi Province, Xianyang city gets the highest value of the economical and intensive land use evaluation index, which is 0.62650; Weinan city gets the lowest value, which is 0.20593. The order from high to low is: Xianyang city > Yulin city > Yan’an city > Baoji city > Xi’an city > Ankang city > Shangluo city > Tongchuan city > Hanzhong city > Weinan city.The current situation index analysis shows that Guanzhong area has a better foundation for the economical and intensive urban land use than the Northern and Southern Shaanxi area.The trend index analysis shows that the degree of the economical and intensive urban land use in Northern Shaanxi area is higher than Guanzhong and Southern Shaanxi area.Based on the cluster analysis, the degree of the economical and intensive urban land use in the main urban areas of the prefectural-level cities in Shaanxi Province is categorized into four types, and the suggestions are provided according to the construction land use characteristic for each type of city.Type I cities should optimize the urban industrial structure, improve the construction land use standards, create a demonstration city for the economical and intensive urban land use and lead the advancement of the economical and intensive degree for the urban construction land use in Shaanxi Province.Type II cities should establish the land reserving system, vitalize the urban stock land, control the idle land issues and improve the land use potential in the old urban areas.Type III cities should make the rational land use planning, strengthen land examination, approval and management, and conduct dynamic monitoring of land use.Type IV cities should focus on increasing investment, improve land use intensity and strictly control the scale of the new construction land.
