With the development of Chinese economy and the faster speed of petrochemical plants construction, there are more and more petrochemical plants, that brings about increasing accident risks. During the production and construction of the plants, the faultiness designs often generate accidents even cause enormous losses and serious consequences. How to avoid risks and remove safety hidden dangers, cut down the accident frequency rate caused by design defects and operating errors, and ensure essential safety of the under-constructing and constructed plants, that is this paper's subject.HAZOP method is used to analyze the plant safety design studied herein.HAZOP, full name is Hazard and Operability Analysis, and it was officially issued in 1974, by the the Imperial Chemical Industries PLC (ICI). HAZOP technology is a kind of process hazards analysis methods, which is used widely by the world industry currently, and also is an important tool and effective mean to eliminate the accident potential and prevent grave accidents by the chemical enterprises. Preliminary, system is also a kind of method of identification of hazards, and proposed measures of disaster reduction method. Besides, it is a method to identify the hazards preliminarily and systematically, and to reduce hazards through giving constructive treatment measures.A 320,000 MTPA Styrene Monomer Plant is used as an example, this paper analysed its hazard and operability, then optimized this plant design according to the HAZOP conclusions. First of all, the HAZOP methods and principle are summerized and confirmed; the HAZOP analysis was finished according to the styrene production process and the safe requirements; optimized and reformed the SM plant on the basis of HAZOP conclusions. This paper mainly aimed at EB unit, EB distillation unit, dehydrogenation unit and intermediate storage unit, etc. Then, optimized and reformed parts of the equipment and process of these units.The papers research is not only based on the discussed conclusions of HAZOP analysis group, but also uses some calculation principles and softwares to check the irrational parts of design, through which it can obtain precise results to be optimized. The advanced softwares in this paper are widely used in engineering designing, including process flow simulation software PRO ?, pipe stress analysis software CAESAR II and process equipment strength calculation software,etc, which ensure the accuracy of the results.The result of our study has an important role in the safety design of domestic SM Plant. It also can be an important reference about safety design to the domestic petrochemical plants.
