In this thesis, nine metal complexes bearing d-block and 4f-block metal ions have been synthesized from rigid o-vanillin and syringaldehyde ligands, including three Tb(?),Gd(?)and Yb(?)polynuclear complexes with o-vanilli,four Mn(?)and Ni(?)polynuclear complexes with syringaldehyde and two Tb(?)and Cd(?)coordination polymers.Their crystal structures and fluorescence properties have been studied.Meanwhile, twelve long-chain Schiff-base ligands were synthesized from the reactions of rigid o-vanillin(or syringaldehyde)and long-chain amino compounds. These new Schiff-base ligands were characterized by ~1H NMR and IR.A binuclear La-Co complex and a hexanuclear La-Co complex were synthesized using these Schiff-base ligands.Their crystal structures and fluorescence properties have been investigated. In additional, two series of 30-nuclear Cd-Ln and 12-nuclear Zn-Ln(Ln = Nd and Yb)clusters were synthesized using different metal salts. All of these d-4f clusters show interesting NIR luminescence properties.
