Aiming at steel substrate grinding wheels are restrained to be utilized extens ively due to the greater mass, lower strength-to-weight ratio and specific modulus,together with overload on the spindle, high power consumption, large grinding wheel deformation, poor vibration resistance, all of which affect machining precision and surface quality, manufacturing technology of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) substrate grinding wheel was researched. CFRP has the characteristics of high specific strength and specific modulus, high fatigue strength, high damping, light weight, low thermal expansion coefficient. In addition, the designable and manufacturable characteristics of CFRP make it possible to be used to manufacture the substrate of high speed and ultra-high speed grinding wheel.The main work and results are summarized as follows:(1) ABAQUS finite element simulation software was used to establish the finite element models of CFRP substrate grinding wheel and steel substrate grinding wheel, and the differences between CFRP substrate grinding wheel steel substrate grinding wheel were analyzed. The results of the finit e element simulation show that the CFRP grinding wheel has a better vibration resistance property; In high speed and ultra-high speed grinding, the radial deformation, internal stress and thermal deformation of CFRP substrate grinding wheel are smaller than that of steel substrate grinding wheel.(2) According to the design and processing requirements of CFRP, combining with the manufacturing process of high speed and ultra-high speed grinding wheel, a kind of quasi-isotropy layer structure CFRP grinding wheel was designed and manufactured.(3) The performances of CFRP grinding wheel were evaluated through natural frequency and damping, radial deformation, power consumption, substrate temperature, the vibration in the process of grinding. Compared with steel substrate grinding wheel, the experimental results showed that CFRP grinding wheel had a better damping characteristics. In high speed and ultra-high speed grinding, the radial deformation of CFRP grinding wheel was smaller. And CFRP gr inding wheel can reduce the power consumption and grinding vibration.
