This thesis presents a research on the key technologies involved in the general design of the new generation of 5000T crane and pipe-laying vessels. Through summarizing the currently new development tendency of huge crane and pipe-laying vessels, a new solutions for balancing the sea-keeping capacity?rapidity and stability was proposed. It provides a scientific basis for further improving the general design technology and expanding the operating scope of the mono-hull crane and pipe-laying vessels. It also provides a reference for the design of other types of offshore vessels which facing similar challenges. This thesis principally encompasses the following researches and conclusions:(1) The 5000T crane and pipe-laying vessel of fair hull surface design has a large draft range from light transit to heavy lifting operation. The breadth varies distinctly when the draft changes.(2) When draft of the vessel is lower (like transit or pipe-laying condition), the breadth is smaller and therefore result in better rapidity and sea-keeping performance. When draft of the vessel is higher (like heavy lifting condition), the breadth is bigger and therefore can satisfy more severe stability requirements. The draft can be adjusted quickly by the effective ballast system.(3) This thesis introduces an application of the basic principle on the new generation of 5000T crane and pipe-laying vessel. But it should be noted that this basic principle not only being valid in crane and pipe-laying vessel design, but also works in the design of other types of offshore vessels like drillship, well service vessels, PSV and so on.
