In the new period of China's social development, along with the development of middle school education in philosophy and teaching mode, middle school building design has also come to change accordingly. In this transformation process, public space design in middle school plays an increasingly important role, which has important implications for teaching and student development, rather than a vassal of traditional teaching space. There should be a holistic approach in the design of public space in middle school, which is no longer a modification of the remaining space after the complication of the functional layout. In fact, in today's progress of middle school building design, public space has become the part which cannot be ignored by the architects, and they should take effort to control it, the success of public space design is often an important criteria for evaluating the design results of the school building.In this paper, public space in the middle school campus is taken as the research object,which contains both the space inside the construction entity and the outdoor public space limited by the buildings in campus.This paper mainly consists of three parts: the first part is the research on the development of middle school teaching mode and the requirements of middle school building, analyzing the reason promoting the development of middle school public space and the theoretical basis of it from the perspective of education. The second part is the analysis of different types of public space, through the interpretation of examples to explore the direction of development of various types of public space,and to summary, based on the case studies, the design characteristics of different types of space. The third part is a comprehensive analysis of the practical engineering case,treating Puyu School in the design of which the author participated as the research object, discussing and evaluating the public space design of Puyu school according to the space classification in the second part, and discussing the echo between Puyu school and the traditional education space appropriately. At the end of this paper,combining with the previous research on various types of public space and the conclusion, the development trend of the design of middle school space is discussed,in order to provide the reference for the design of the public space in middle school and explore the future development direction of campus space at the same time.
