With the virtues of strong instantaneous power, strong ultraviolet radiation, low power consumption, small size and easy operation features, the new spherical short-arc xenon flash lamp has been found an increasingly wide utilization in industrial automation, medical and analytical fields. For the purpose of assisting the development and production of such sources, providing the necessary product quality testing and laboratory test equipment, we studied the process of electron emission, charge and discharge, equivalent circuit through theoretical analysis, developed the optical and electrical properties analysis instrument, and then test the stability working conditions of the xenon flash lamp.First of all, in this paper, we analyzed the discharge and emission process in the microscopic view based on gas discharge theory and cathode electronic theory, and then discussed the impact of the discharge circuit on pulse luminescence upon the discharge circuit equation.In the discharge process of xenon flash lamp, it is difficult to detect electrical characteristics of the xenon flash lamp like the high-voltage, large-current and microseconds process. We proposed a method of detecting electrical properties using high attenuation probe and small resistance with non-inductive resistor connection in series. Those relevant operating parameters were obtained rapidly,including the trigger, electron emission, glow discharge, equivalent resistance, etc.Secondly, an optical and electrical properties analysis instrument was developed. According to the real-time detection of the instantaneous voltage, current and light pulses in the discharge process of the xenon flash lamp, by discharging and analyzing the emission stability and the working performance, as well as high voltage driver adjustment case, the software of the detecting system was also developed.Finally, it was well studied to design some related experiments with the detecting instrument, detect the transient discharge voltage, discharge current and the optical pulse signal of the xenon flash lamp, especially it was used to detect and then analyze the relationship between of the photo-electric properties and the discharge circuit parameters and arc size.In one word, by this study, we finally completed the related systematic work of the formation, adjustment, testing of the xenon flash lamp, and get detailed test results, which will be of significant importance in the field of xenon flash lamp performance evaluation, quality control and new product development.
