With the rapid development and rising prosperity of network communication technology and information processing technology, the concept of smart grid is in-depth people's lives more and more. As an important basis and nodes support of the smart grid, Smart substation is essential to the construction content. In recent years, a lot of smart substation have put into the actual operation. In order to maintain smart substation construction and operation of security and stability, we demand more analysis and summary of relevant technology.The concept and development of smart substation had been introduced. By comparing the differences of smart substation and the traditional substation, the obvious advantages of smart substation had highlighted. The subftation secondary system is the key to smart substation. The secondary system introduced the concept of the architecture, device configuration specification requirements and network in detail. Related equipment design and configuration requirements made clear.Relay protection is an important part of the substation secondary system. As the main basis, with the standards of Q/GDW 441-2010 Technical Specifications of Protection for Smart Substation, The general requirements of "four features" of smart substation's specification had been detailed. In the case of line protection, transformer protection, bus protection, automatic safety device.The relay protection configuration, the principle of setting principle and protection of smart substation, has been clear about procurement and configuration requirements of smart substation relay protection equipment. According to smart substation for a long time operation and the author's own experience, some protection device inside smart substation practical improving method and suggestions had put forward.For instance analysis provides a theoretical basis and the practical running experience.As a smart substation 110 kv for instance, based on the technical specification, the second time system equipment (mainly relay protection equipment) is configured. Through detailed setting calculation process, the station 110kv line,110 kv section switch, the main change,10 kv lines, capacitor, grounding and safety automatic device and other kinds of equipment have been protected fixed value setting, and been given the corresponding setting basis and the calculation results. The results will be made into formal available relay protection setting value list.The technology to the smart grid develop faster and faster, the requirements for the construction of smart substation are becoming more and more. In order to adapt to the development of smart grid, smart substation construction and groping process need a periodic summary. In this paper, the research and analysis of existing technology of smart substation secondary system, are helpful to realize smart substation construction situation and development prospect, also have very important significance for the sustainable development of smart substation related technology.
