As the amount of cars increases rapidly recent years, road traffic accidents bring people more harm and economic losses. There are more complex road conditions in our country,so it may easily happen that a car hits the roadside trees or poles because of vehicle slippage or deviation.Generally speaking, side structure of a car is relatively weak compared to the frontal structure. It doesn't have many components to absorb the impact energy.Furthermore, pole type obstacles will cause more damage to the car body.So when the side pole impact occurs, occupants will get easily hurt. It's extremely necessary to study the side pole impactThis paper studied the pole side impact of a car model based on the finite element theory according to pole side impact rules in Euro-NCAP.Software Hyperworks and LS-DYNA is used in this paper. After verifying the finite element model of the vehicle, this paper compared two types( moving deformation barrier and pole barrier) side impact of a car and find pole side impact will cause more deformation of car body. The door, the sill and lower part of B pillar deform seriously. It's a serious threat to the safety of occupants due to high risk of injury to the head and chest. So this paper improved the side structure of the car including structure, material and plate thickness by using orthogonal test and multi-factor weightiness analytical method. The vehicle lateral accerlaration and front door maximum intrusion were defined as the two main targets for evaluation. This optimal improvement scheme can improve the crashworthiness of car body and reduce the risk of injury to some extent. At the same time, the crashworthiness of car body in MDB side impact is also improved. So improving the crashworthiness of pole side impact can be considered first when considering the side impact safety. The method and the results of the study provide some reference to improve the vehicle safety and reduce the occupant injury risk in pole side impact.
