With the rapid development of economy, the complexity of the grid structure and changes of the energy policy, the traditional power network has been difficult to meet the requirements of the development. Intelligent reconstruction of conventional substation is the trend of the times as well as the key and base in construction of strong and smart grid.This paper analyses the challenges and the status of conventional substation based on discussing the intelligent technology research status at home and abroad. It discusses the necessity and feasibility of the intelligent transformation from the three aspects of technical, economic, operation and management. It studies the structure and technical features of intelligent substation, the research summarizes the major domestic related equipment research and development and technical progress of the status quo. It proposes ideas of intelligent transformation of conventional substation. It discusses scheme of intelligent transformation of conventional substation, and analyses the advantages and disadvantages of various schemes. The related technologies of smart substation, respectively from the intelligent primary equipment, network structure, advanced applications, auxiliary control system, communication etc. are discussed.Combined with the example of intelligent reconstruction project of 220 kV Luding substation, it gives the concrete design of intelligent transformation of the conventional substation. By comparing several projects, combined with Luding station actual size and needs, it chooses three layer two network structure design. It puts forward the transformation plan in the station control level, bay level and process level. It also gives the specific configuration and selection of intelligent primary equipment transformation. Based on the intelligent protection and control equipment and communication system transformation needs analysis, it discusses the specific implementation plan. The design idea of the architecture of the integrated platform is presented. It provides suggestions for intelligent transformation of conventional substation and accumulates experience. Finally, it prospects the problems and difficulties to be solved in the future intelligent transformation process.
