With the rapid development of urbanization, to create a high quality public space for residents is becoming a hot topic in the urban construction. Square is one of the most typical physical concrete image which can reflect the characteristics of urban public space. Dynamic square space can not only promote public communication and improve the quality of life of residents, but also have a great significance for the construction of small towns. In this paper, take Ganquan life square for example, which includes shuangyong square, xiantun square and meishui square, located in Loess Hill and Gully Region of Northern Shaanxi, studied the characteristics of small town and the method of vitality evaluation and the select dynamic index. Accounting for the relationship between the square space dynamic and town characteristics, explaining the main factors affects the small town square vitality. In order to provide reference to vitality construction for small cities and towns square in loess hilly-gully region. Main conclusions are as follows:(1) Based on the principle of evaluation index selection, applying frequency statistics, theoretical and practical analysis, Delphi expert consultation method and data test to screen the vigor indexes which influence the small town square vitality. Finally, determined the 27 items important indicators, such as walking accessibility, public transportation convenience, scale, proportion of suitability, the integrity of the border, the population density of suitability, adequacy of recreation facilities, public activities attraction, to establish the evaluation index system influencing the small town square vigorous in the loess hilly-gully region.(2) Based on the questionnaire data test of reliability and validity, principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out on the data of each evaluation index, classified by location vitality, space vitality, facilities vitality and cultural vitality 4 principal components; And then, using PCA to each impact factor weights, so as to get the weight of each level, to establish evaluation index system. The result of evaluating ganquan life square is that the factors affecting the vitality of the small town square from high to low is the cultural, facilities, space and location vitality. one of the biggest influence is culture activities, including regional culture, management maintenance and planting quality, which is the most attractive factor for users to come; the second is the facilities, the perfect amenities can enrich residents’ activity type and extend the time of activity; the third is space factors, the more users reflect the situation in the study of aspects, mainly concentrated in less space and space type single and not into aspects greening; the last of the list is the location factors, which is have a relationship with the size of the county. Ganquan is small in the area, urban linear distribution along the main road, so most users said it is not restricted by the location to choose square activities.(3) Combining with the characteristics of the location, the surrounding land use, the type of user activities and respondents questions and suggestions, aiming at the problems in ganquan square construction, combining with the special environment of small cities and towns in the loess hilly-gully region, this paper put forward vitality promotion strategy from four aspects which includes blending in the local culture of public activities; strengthening the management of environment and facilities maintenance; increasing leisure facilities construction and improving the fun in winter by rational utilization of green space.
