Residential historic area in modem China experienced a special historical period when oriental culture and western culture blended, and formed special residential architecture forms and urban scenes.Compared with public buildings, the attention to residential historic areas is not enough while the group value has always been ignored. On the other hand, residential historic areas in modern China are well retained in quantity and scale, protection and reuse based on value judgment has great social effect and realistic significance in sculpturing urban historical and cultural space, keeping urban memory and context, and expressing the "spirit of site".The extensiveness and diversity of value leads to the complexity of value judgment.Set up multi-level evaluation system through the sorting of reference elements of value judgment, and evaluate the modern residential historic areas from the indexes of protection and reuse.Based on the linear model for evaluation, quantify the qualitative evaluating result, get the comprehensive result of reuse and protection by virtue of planar reference frame, and provide reference for protection and reuse based on value. The thesis includes four parts, six chapters in total. The first part is an introduction of the background, research methods, research significance, research object and research scope. The second part introduces the correlational studies about protection and reuse of historic areas home and abroad. The third part includes chapter 3 to chapter 5,this part is a research about the protection and reuse of the modern residential historic areas in Nanjing.Chapter 3 is an analysis of current situation of the residential historic areas in modern Nanjing.Chapter 4 sets up the quantitative evaluation system of reuse and protection.Chapter 5 discusses the rationality and feasibility of the quantitative evaluation system of reuse and protection based on Xibaicaiyuan historic area case.Based on the third part, the fourth part concludes the strategies for the protection and reuse of modern residential historic areas in China from the aspects of urban society and planning design. The whole thesis contains about 62 000 words,61 pictures and charts.
