Flash floods is due to heavy rain, melting snow or other reasons outburst flood-control facilities in the mountain river and creek formed by storm surge flooding and falling incidental landslides, avalanches, mudslides in general.Vietnam in a monsoon tropic humid area, being contiguous to the South China Sea and the West-North of the Pacific Ocean,Vietnam not only has diversified climate and plentiful resources but also has many natural disasters, especially floods, flash floods and typhoons. In Vietnam, flash floods are considered severe disasters that occur suddenly, having high flood intensity, high amplitude and huge damages. These floods usually occur in the small and medium river basins in the Northern mountainous and the Central part of Vietnam.According to surveys carried out from 2006 up to now, flash floods occur more frequently in Vietnam, the number of flash floods per year has increased year by year, causing tremendous damages on people's lives and the environment.Along with the socialeconomic development in the Country, the serious damages causing by natural disasters rises millions USD.In 10 years(2006-2015),the damages causing by only flash flood and landslide rises rapidly over VND 700 billion. Therefore,it is necessary to strengthen the surveillance, warning and forecast of flash floods disasters in order to defend it FFPI,namely Flash Flood Potential Index,is a model that combines the main factors that influence flood, including terrain features, land use, vegetation cover and soil characteristics and it can be used to calculate the risk of flash floods based on the analysis of GIS(Geographic Information System). In this paper,a case study of Dahuoai region's flash flood potential is carried out with the FFPI method, and the flood risk assessment and analysis of the area are completed while the thematic map of flood risk is obtained.
