The Study Of Traditional Revival On Modern University Campuses In China

This paper aims to establish a framing theory of the traditional revival on Modern University Campuses in China.By mining the historical social background,summarizing certain universal characteristics,and analyzing the conflicts between tradition and modern of these university campuses,the research studies the building design and campus planning of these modern universities in China.The study mainly comprises four of the following parts:The first part analyzes the most three important reasons leading to the traditional revival on Modern University Campuses in China: the localization of preaching strategy of western missionaries;the nationalism of social movement in modern China;and the traditional historical context of Chinese cities in modern time.The second part studies the building design of the traditional revival on Modern University Campuses in China.This part analyzes the two main tendency of it:eclecticism and revivalism;studies its evolution from different periods and its variabilities in different districts;discusses the incompatibility between traditional form and modern space,structure,and material in university buildings.The third part studies the campus planning of the traditional revival on Modern University Campuses in China.This part analyzes the two typical prototype of it: Mall-pattern in America university campuses and courtyard-pattern in Chinese traditional architecture.The application of traditional Chinese architecture symbol such as tower,and culture metaphor such as orientation,are also discussed.The forth part studies the contribution of architects and other non-professional people related to modern university campuses in China,among which including the work and theory of the famous American architect—Henry Murphy.In conclusion,the traditional revival on Modern University Campuses in China has certain progressing significance on both historical and contemporary prospective.These traditional revival modern university campuses are important parts of the precious cultural heritage in China.
