At present, along with the understanding of old industrial buildings continues to deepen, both the government and the society pay more and more attention to the protection and utilization of old industrial buildings.More and more frequently, reconstruction and expansion have been used in the reuse of old industrial buildings owing to its remarkable benefits in architecture, culture and economy, which shows an trend of diversification at the same time. With the preservation of ancient flour mills and a suitable expansion,Tangshan urban planning museum creates a public space, which is plain and neat, rich in spatial hierarchy and really accessible to the whole city.Through retaining the original factory houses, facilities and natural plants,Vanke Company builds an industrial heritages theme community in Changsha,Purple Stage, where the industrial culture coexists with modern fashion. After experiencing and investing a large number of design projects of old industrial buildings' reconstruction and expansion, three questions the author wants to study are:First, what significance does the reconstruction and expansion of those old industrial buildings have after losing its producing function?Second, what are the types of combination of the old and new buildings in those design projects? And what characteristics does every different type have?Third, what basic principles should the designers follow during the combination of the old and new buildings? And what techniques can the designers use?Based on this, the research of this paper is as follows:The first chapter mainly expounds the research origin, research background, research methods, and puts forward three problems, and finally puts forward the research framework of this paper. The second chapter mainly discusses the concepts and design theories related to the combination of old and new during the reconstruction and expansion of old industrial buildings, summarizes the characteristics in the practice of its reconstruction and expansion both domestic and abroad, analyzes the meanings of the combination of old and new in its reconstruction and expansion. The third chapter summarizes ten types of the combination pattern according to the former part in this paper:horizontally adjacent, horizontally independent, vertically stacked, downward extended, hiding new in old, containing old in new, packing old with a new skin, cover old with a new roof, interlocking old and new, interlocking through a linear mass. Moreover, this chapter analyses these ten types'features with several specific examples.Lastly, this chapter compares all these ten types and discusses their applicable situation respectively. The fourth chapter summarizes four basic principles and several design methods in terms of architecture mass and material applying to the combination of old and new in the reconstruction and expansion of old industrial buildings. The fifth chapter, based on the expansion design of Shanghai Yangshupu water factory which the author participates at Fusion Architects,Shanghai, practices the basic principles and design methods stated in the above chapter and gives the author three inspirations:firstly, the reconstruction and expansion can not only retain the old memory, but also can create new memory;secondly, old industrial buildings will not hinder the design, but will enlighten the design;thirdly, the combination of old and new means their coexistence and their harmony. The author hopes that this paper can enrich the theory system of the combination of old and new in the reconstruction and expansion of old industrial buildings, and can also make some contributions to architects' designs and creations in the future.
