United States and Europe will implement Emission Stage 4 on off-road machines in 2015.Today John Deere 6D can only meet Emission Stage 3 requirement.So a program needed to update the engine,cooling package and install SCR after-treatment system to meet emission requirement.Currently there are a lot studies regarding to Design for Six Sigma and System Engineering.In this thesis the history,current status,how to use it and potential benefit for these two methods or tools will be introduced.John Deere has a very good program management system.A lot of tools have been identified and applied in the program management process.But there are not many programs which implement Design for Six Sigma and System Engineering at the same time.This thesis shows how the customer need was identified at the beginning,how the program charter was defined,how the program risk assessment was conducted,how the Design for Six Sigma and System Engineering projects were identified and defined,how these tools were successfully implemented.At the end it shows how much benefit the company can get by using these tools.Successfully implementing Design for Six Sigma and System Engineering in product development process has demonstrate these tools could help to reduce the cycle time of development,reduce R&D investment,improve the first pass yield of design.All of these could encourage people to be more proactive to use these tools in the future.
