Objective: To investigate the immune functions and observe the effects of Huai qi huang on immunity of children with asthma and the resultant changes in upper respiratory tract infection and Fe NO,post-treatment with Huai qi huang. Methods: A prospective 15 months study was carried out on children admitted to the respiratory department of the Dalian Children's hospital,China with asthma. The study was performed from June 2014 to August 2015.137 patients were randomly chosen and divided into two groups;first group(the treatment group)consisted of 97 patients who was treated with traditional Chinese medicine Huai qi huang along with the standard medical treatment and the second group(the control group)consisted of 40 patients who used only the standard medical treatment.ACT(Asthma Control Test),Fe NO(fractional exhaled nitric oxide),number of upper respiratory tract infections(URTI)as well as immune function tests were noted. These were performed on the day of admission and after 90 days time. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 software. Results: 1.The mean age of asthmatic children was 5.25 years(n=137,S.D= 1.790).89 cases(64.96%)were males;48 cases(35.04%)were females.Based on age group,4-6 years old were 82.48% and 7-13 years old were 17.52%.2.Among the 40 patients who met the inclusion criteria and performed immunological tests,65% were immunocompromised and the abnormal immune functions results consisted of a predominance in(mixed)cellular and humoral immune abnormalities(42%)followed by humoral immune abnormality at 31% and least being single cellular immune impairment at 4%.3.In the 137 patients with asthma remission,72 patients with good asthma control were enrolled in the study group,47 patients in the treatment group and 25 patients in the control group. There were 65 cases of poor control of asthma,50 cases in the treatment group and 15 cases in the control group. The scores of ACT were improved in the treatment group and the control group,p <0.05,the difference was statistically significant. The control level of asthma in the treatment group of the good asthma control group was better than that of the control group,p <0.01,the difference was statistically significant.4.There were 35 cases of children with pulmonary function test,20 cases in treatment group and 15 cases in control group out of the 137 children with asthma remission. The FEV1 score of the treatment group and the control group were improved after treatment,p <0.05,the difference was statistically significant. There was no significant difference between the two groups,p> 0.05,the results were not statistically significant.5.In the 137 patients with asthma remission,60 patients with respiratory tract infection were enrolled in the study group, including 30 patients in the treatment group and 30 patients in the control group.Compared with the control group, the URTI of the treatment group was significantly lower than that of the control group(p <0.05),and the difference was statistically significant(p <0.05).6.In the 137 patients with asthma remission,40 patients with Fe NO were enrolled in this study,20 patients in the treatment group and 20 patients in the control group. The expression of Fe NO in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the control group(p <0.05),and there was no significant difference between the two groups(p> 0.05).There was no significant difference between the control group and the control group.Among the 137 asthma patients who met the inclusion criteria, there were 97 patients in the treatment group and 40 patients in the control group. After treatment with inhaled corticosteroids, both ACT scores and lung function were better than before when compared,p >0.05,there was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions: 1.Asthma is predominant by 4/5 in preschool children, while the gender prevalence was greater in males.2.About 3/5 of children with asthma has immune dysfunction,of which mostly affected are humoral and cellular immunity abnormalities.3.Asthmatic children have better asthma control and improved lung functions after inhaled corticosteroid therapy and Asthma Control Test score improvement rate when asthma is controlled was considerably better in the treatment group who used Huai Qi Huang.4.Combination of both western standard asthma treatment with traditional Chinese medicine Huai Qi Huang was significantly better in reducing number of upper respiratory tract infections and airway inflammation.
