Selection And Application Of Interpretation Strategies For A Specific Group Of Foreigners

With opening-up and reform, and economic development of China, increasing number of foreigners have come to work and live in China, many of whom have gradually accumulated some basic Chinese knowledge and a little cultural background to deal with daily life. However, they cannot totally understand Chinese especially in some strong professional field; therefore, they consist of a specific group of foreigners who know a little Chinese but not enough to be employed in professional work and need interpreters in some urgent situations. The selection and application of proper translation strategies appear to be very crucial to help fulfill the task of interpreting for these people.This paper is a practical interpreting report describing how the author employed domestication and foreignization strategies in interpreting at a meeting held by Chengdu Exit-Entry Administration Bureau by analyzing some concrete cases and several conclusions have been reached as follows:The pre-interpretation preparation is very important, and sufficient preparation will directly decide the smoothness of interpretation. It can help provide better interpretation services to meet audiences'demands as the interpreter should know about their bilingual language level, the issues that they concern, and what information they want to get before interpreting. Therefore it is necessary to be familiar with attendees'nationality, background information, bilingual language level, working industry, etc.Besides, proper selection and application of translation strategies according to the characteristic of the specific group of foreigners is indispensable and contributes to better achievements. Considering different factors, the author applies domestication and foreignization strategies to the meeting of Chengdu Exit-Entry Administration Bureau and testifies their reflections in several cases extracted from the meeting interpretation.The background and content of the meeting are introduced in Chapter One. The pre-interpretation preparation of this meeting is specified in Chapter Two. In Chapter Three, the core of the paper, the author combines two interpreting strategies to analyze some cases of the meeting. In the last chapter, the author introduces the reflections after applying the two strategies and concludes several ideas for improvement.
