The Application Of Domestication And Foreignization Strategies In Press Conference Interpreting

With the rapid development of economic integration, people from variouscountries hope to communicate and exchange with each other. Interpreting receives alot of attention because it gives full play to both the transmission and development ofdifferent cultures. Duo to the diversity of different languages and cultures, there existsbig dispute in translation field about how to get a qualified interpreting. There are twoopposite views about how to deal with the problems when doing interpreting:domestication and foreignization. Based on the theory of domestication andforeignization, this thesis will discuss the interpreting of Chinese cultural factors inpress conferences. The author of this paper introduces domestication andforeignization theory into interpreting, in order to explore the application of these twomethods in this specific situation of press conference. Before analyzing theapplication of domestication and foreignization with a series of examples, the authorhas introduced the characteristics of press conference, the merits and demerits ofdomestication and foreignization, as well as the unique Chinese cultural factors. It is areal problem for most interpreters to interpret a language into another one withoutlosing unique cultural flavors, meanwhile ensuring the qualification of understandingby foreigners. That is the meaning of existence of this thesis. The study found that duoto the advantages and disadvantages of each interpreting method, the interpretersshould use the approaches in accordance with specific situations. In press conference,the interpreters tend to use the domesticating strategy. They often adjust the tone oforiginal speech, remove the confusing and irrelevant information, and change theChinese fuzzy words into specific and clear English version. In order to transfer andspread Chinese culture, expand the influence of Chinese culture, and satisfy thecuriosity for different cultures, foreinizating strategy achieves more attentions inrecent years. However, the interpreter should strive to achieve clear and smooth targetspeech for the purpose of fluent communication, not just follow the advocacy offoreignization.This thesis consists of three parts including introduction, the main body andconclusion. The first part is introduction. It mainly introduces the research status of theapplication of domestication and foreignization at home and abroad. And the authoralso presents the problems and significance in real life.The second part is the main body of this paper. This part includes four chapters.Chapter One is the literature review. It mainly presents the existing theories andresults in the field of interpreting.Chapter Two illustrates the specific theories of domestication and foreignization.Each strategy owns its merits and faults in the process of interpreting.Chapter Three analyzes the one of most important branches in interpreting—pressconference interpreting (PCI). It occupies an important role in China, because of itsirreplaceable function as a window to the outside world. Due to the unique Chinesecultural factors, it is significant to study the application of domestication andforeignization used in the process of interpreting.Chapter Four discusses the application of domestication and foreignization inpress conferences. It is the core of this part.The last part is conclusion. In this part, the author summarizes the findings andlimitations of this paper.
