As a total negation of the Ming Dynasty, the concept "Song without poem" marked the beginning of Southern Song Zhang Jie, after Yan Yu, Yuan Haowen, Yang Weizhen, Li Dongyang, who continue to develop, and ultimately by the Ming Li Mengyang, He Jingming its theoretical framework is completed. By comparing with Tang poetry, people of Song consciously did reflection and criticism to poetry in its dynasty. During the discussion and criticism about the method of poetry, the concepts of "Tang poetry" and "Song poetry" had been gradually constructed, and characteristics of each had been summarized. Song's comments of poetry largely based on the concept "Song poetry" and did not deny the existence of poetry in Song dynasty. However, the comparison with Tang poetry itself, laid the foundation of the concept of "Song without poetry" People in Jin and Yuan dynasty then gradually began to form negative overview of the concept of "Song poetry" as a whole. As the criticism extent of Song poetry continued to strengthen, the object of negation extended gradually from the initial Jiangxi faction to the entire group of Song poetry. The depth of the criticism also extended from the debate on the method and style of poetry to the total repudiation on the creation of Song poetry. The term "Song without poetry" first appeared in Ye Sheng's quotation from Liu Song in Ming dynasty. However, the formation of the concept experienced the long process from the Southern Song Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. "Song without poetry" as a general idea in literary trend, instead of suddenly proposed and then known to the world while, was first accepted as a non-systematic impression, then gradually organized into a poetic theory marked with total repudiation on Song poetry. In this whole process, Yan Yu, Li Mengyang played the most crucial role. In addition to the different styles and tastes of the Tang and Song poetry, the reason why the concept of "Song without poem" was widely accepted by the people in Yuan and Ming Dynasty had a more important motivation which was deeply rooted in the Chinese literary tradition——"The more ancient the better". After the criticism Yan Yu of Song, it is natural to enjoy a standard of judgment turned over the previous generation of Tang. And Li Mengyang advocating retro, negating the Song poetry, but also want to be able to directly follow their poetry even before Tang Dynasty's poetry tradition. After the denial of the whole Song poetry, "Song without poem* became the slogan consensus on the literary scene in the early and middle Ming Dynasty. Under this influence, people in Ming dynasty naturally reduced, or even cut off reading the Song poetry, which led to the alienation of Song poetry in the entire literary scene. Meanwhile, "Song poetry" had changed gradually and even genre criticism that took The Neo Confucianism poem as the representative of Song poetry appeared. When the sympathizers of Song poetry——such as Wang Shizhen at his old age and Gong'an faction led by Yuan Hongdao began to admire Song poetry, the literary scene had once again experienced a rediscovering process of already alienated Song poetry. In this process, the concept of Song without poetry had gradually withdrawn from the mainstream literary horizons. The last part of this thesis, by the statistics and comparison of poetry anthologies of Song, finds that the aim of poetry anthologies of Song is document preservation instead of advocating the poetry concept of Song. In addition, the number of poetry anthologies also appears to be "many in the start and end while rare in the middle" just like the rise and fall of "Song without poem", which in turn confirms the "Song without poetry" concept is not just theoretic idea brought up by critics, but also reflected practically in the document preservation in the Yuan and Ming dynasties.
