China has witnessed a new round of rapid development in recent years after China became the world's second largest economy after the United States in 2010. This is not only a sign of improvement of China's economic strength and international status but shows closer communication and cooperation with other countries around the world. When an increasing number of famous companies and foreign investors swarm into Chinese market, there is an urgent demand for them to deeply know about China by a formal channel. This gives rise to more translation of publicity materials.Publicity materials introduce some information in the areas of economy, politics and culture,which provide more convenient information for the communication between China and foreign countries. In view of the precision and specificity of these materials, many excellent experts and scholars have made intensive studies on translation techniques and methods of these materials,all of which provide rich and profound theoretical basis and practical basis for the translation of publicity materials.In recent years, Qingdao, with its unique geographical advantage has been an important window for China to communicate with the world. Therefore, the writer chose Report on the Work of Qingdao Government in 2014 as the material for translation practice and translation criticism.The report is arranged in five parts: introduction, task description, process description, case analysis and conclusion. In the first two parts, the writer introduces the basic information about publicity material and the source text. On the part of case analysis, the writer analyzes the translation practice from the perspective of linguistic-level and cultural-level. Moreover, a concrete analysis is made in lexical level, syntactic level, and in the translation of general culture-loaded words and Chinese four-character expressions. In the translation of the source text,the writer adopts the theory of “dynamic equivalence” by Nida in order to guarantee the accuracy of the translation and help readers get a better understanding of the source text.With this translation practice, the writer comes to the following implications about the translation of publicity materials: firstly, the translation of publicity materials should take priority to convey the information of the source text accurately; secondly, proper words should be chosen according to different contexts while sentence pattern should be adjusted flexibly in the process of translation; thirdly, in view of many culture-loaded terms used in publicity materials, the translator should adopt different translation strategies via contextual analysis, such as freetranslation and literal translation with notes; and lastly, the analysis of the translations of Report on the Work of Government released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in different years will contribute to improving the quality of translations of publicity materials.The writer wishes that she could provide useful information about Qingdao to people who are interested in this beautiful city. More importantly, the students majoring in MTI will be able to obtain useful methods of translating publicity materials by reading this translation report.
