This report on the translation practice of an excerpt from Coonardoo, written by Katharine Susannah Prichard, tries to analyze and discuss the main difficulties and solutions in this novel translation. Katharine portrays daily life of Australian aborigines in Coonardoo. The excerpt has numerous dialogues and vivid scenery descriptions. After a thorough reading, the translator summarizes four major challenges in translation, including names, dialogues, descriptive sentences and long sentences.In the process of translation, the author adopts various translation techniques to keep the style of original text and conform to expressing habits of target readers. This report focuses on four techniques as follows:combining annotation with transliteration, choosing appropriate meanings, turning phrases into clauses and changing word orders. In the meantime, case analysis is provided. It is hoped that this report is beneficial for the translation study of Australian aboriginal novels.
