A Project Report On Translating Chinese Descriptions Of Cultural And Historical Tourist Attractions Into English

This report,based on the project of translating Chinese descriptions of cultural and historical tourist attractions into English,totaling over 10,000 words,analyzes the text type of the descriptions of tourist attractions and the differences between Chinese and English tourism texts in style,defines the purposes and functions of the descriptions of tourist attractions and major issues and difficulties encountered in the course of translating descriptions of tourist attractions into English.The first one is the the lexical voids caused by the cultural vacancy,and the second one is the different manners of writing and rhetoric in textual level of Chinese and English descriptions of tourist attractions.Under the guidance of Skopostheorie,I identify some effective strategies for the translation of the descriptions of tourist attractions.According to this theory,translation is regarded as an intercultural communicative action with its intended functions and purposes.It is the intended purpose that justifies the translation process and strategies.Therefore,in the course of translation,I took the functions and purposes of the original texts into full account and adhered to skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.On this basis,some translation strategies are put forward,such as amplification,omission,reorganizing and rewriting.Under the guidance of Skopostheorie,I adopted flexible strategies instead of rigidly adhering to the form of the original text so as to produce a version capable of achieving intended functions.
