More recently, China has been into a rapid development period in medical area.International communication, such as learning academic achievements and creating an innovative mode of thinking, is of great significance for China to move forward in medicine so as to improve the health-care quality further on a national level in China.Reading medical literature is now one of the important and convenient ways for us to have a good command of the newest and most valuable medical achievements abroad.Therefore, the timely and accurate translation of English medical literature is of great value.This practice report is based on the translation of a research report on the drug therapy for breast cancer from Pub-Med: Lapatinib and trastuzumab in combination with an aromatase inhibitor for the first-line treatment of metastatic hormone receptor-positive breast cancer which over-expresses human epidermal growth factor 2(HER2): a systematic review and economic analysis(chapter 1-3). These three chapters respectively introduce the background, definition of decision problem and assessment of clinical effectiveness of this review report.This practice report takes the core of Eugene. A. Nida's functional translation theory—functional equivalence theory, covering formal equivalence and functional equivalence(Nord, 2001), as a guidance to discuss the difficulties, translation strategies and methods of English to Chinese translation of medical literature. English for medical purpose(EMP) belongs to English for science and technology, which is objective, accurate and rigorous. With some typical examples of the translation practice, this practice report explores how to fulfill the equivalence of form and function in the translation of English for medical purpose on three levels respectively: functional equivalence on the lexical level, on syntactical level and on logical level.The translator believes that the strategy of literal translation should be employed when the formal and functional equivalence between the source and target text can be satisfied at the same time. If not, the adjustment of some elements' sequence in a sentence of the source text according to the sequence of target language is needed, so as to meet the functional equivalence as a priority.Through the translation of the medical literature, the translator finds it vital to make sure of logical relationship within or among sentences and store some medical information for translation.The practice report is of great importance both in the employment of Nida's functional equivalence theory in the English-to-Chinese translation of English for medical purpose and the improvement of the translator's ability. In addition, it is also a useful effort which may provide others with some valuable messages in the translation of English for medical purpose.
