With more and more scientific books being translated into Chinese, translators are becoming significantly crucial nowadays for they are the intermediary agents between author and readers. However, popular science translation does not equal to scientific translation for the former one normally conveys scientific information by using simple and popular language. Therefore, the author finds it worthwhile to study how to make accurate as well as natural target text in popular science translation. In order to find possible answers to this research question, the author translated a part of Periodic Tales into Chinese and then put it under the framework of three dimensions, namely language, culture and communication. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one introduces the background of popular science translation and the significance of this thesis. Chapter two reviews academic studies related to popular science translation both home and abroad. Chapter three analyses the Chinese translation of Periodic Tales and summarizes skills which are frequently used by the author. Chapter four gives a conclusion which consists of the summary and drawbacks of this thesis. After careful analysis, the author finds that six translation skills including annotation, adding, omission, paraphrasing, special handling and using Chinese idioms are commonly used in this case. In this way, the translator are able to provide accurate as well as natural target text which creates better reading experience for readers and improve their initiatives, successfully fulfilling the goal of popularizing scientific knowledge. Nevertheless, this thesis also has its limitations. It is possible that not all the difficulties and situations are fully covered by one case study. New challenges may occur different popular science books. But the author believes that the examples and summary of those frequently-used skills would surely benefit other translators and scholars, complementing the field of popular science translation.
