| How to translate long and complex sentences has always been a challenge in E-C translation. Long sentences are generally characterized by more and longer modifiers, parallel components and subordinate clauses than other sentences, thus making it more difficult to understand and translate them. Based on the translation of Chapter one and the first section of Chapter two from How Politics Makes Us Sick:Neoliberal Epidemics, written by Ted Schrecker and Clare Bambra, this paper gives an analysis on the translation strategies of long and complex English sentences. In order to make the translation smoother and more acceptable, strategies from scholars like XU Jianping, ZHANG Peiji and ZHONG Shuneng, etc. are employed.This paper is divided into four parts. The first is introduction, in which the outline of the book and main types of long and complex sentences in it are provided. Starting from the definition and characteristics of English long and complex sentences, part two then reviews the common problems in translation of such sentences and translation strategies of such sentences summarized by different scholars, and then states the strategies applied in the practice-synchronizing, embedding, cutting, inserting and recasting. Part three gives a specific analysis on the application of above strategies in the translation practice. The last part is a summary, in which the frequently-used translation strategies for long and complex sentences in the practice are reiterated. Besides, it also points out the limitations in this paper. |
