This paper aims to study the impacts of enumeration on student interpreters in simultaneous interpretation from Chinese to English and to put forward some coping tactics. This paper takes the Effort Model by Daniel Gile as a theoretical framework and classifies enumeration into several categories, namely the nouns, the adjectives, the verbs, the proper nouns, the phrases and repeated information. Through an empirical experiment, the paper conducts both quantitative and qualitative analysis of the performance of 8 participants. The author finds that enumeration will have negative impacts on the performance of student interpreters, leading to failure sequence, misinterpretation and omissions. The paper also identifies the main factors that affect the simultaneous interpretation of enumeration, namely, the number of the items in enumeration, parts of speech, information density, repeated information, the position of enumeration in the discourse, and the background knowledge of the interpreter. The author also finds that by using certain strategies such as omission, simplification, generalization and reformulation, student interpreters can improve their performance. Through this study, the author hopes to put forward some suggestions on improving the simultaneous interpretation of enumeration from Chinese to English.
