Evaluation is a complicated and important phenomenon in language. In the last few years there have been various studies to evaluation, and there are a variety of terms related to study it. In recent years, with the globalization of the world economy, news translation has become one of the hottest research fields which receive more and more attention from relevant experts. As one of the most persuasive media in our daily life, it is obvious that news translations are saturated with evaluative resources. This thesis attempts to investigate evaluative resources between source and target texts in E-C news translation in Financial Times by employing Bednarek's(2006) parameter-based framework, the latest modification and recent development of Martin's appraisal theory. Based on the framework, the thesis will employ manual analysis complemented by quantitative and qualitative analysis for a clearer understanding of the evaluative meaning in the data. The research reveals six core parameters in the corpus: Comprehensibility, Emotivity, Expectedness, Importance, Possibility/Necessity, and Reliability. The distributions of these parameters indicate that in E-C news translation the translator prefers to choose evaluative expressions to show his approval or disapproval in order to express his viewpoints, attitudes and positions. The thesis uncovers different distribution of evaluative resource, such as emotive resource differing, adding or reducing on the Source Text(hereafter ST) and Target Text(hereafter TT). Besides, the causes of the difference and suggestions in translating news is also researched. Three suggestions for faithful translation have been given under Bednarek's parameter-based framework: aligning with the attitude of the ST; being faithful to the culture and ideology in ST; keeping the form and degree of Evaluators equivalent. Then, the thesis find the deficiency of Bednarek's(2006) parameter-based framework and try to consummate it by adding graduation in the parameter. The findings are very helpful and instructive for the teaching, appreciation and learning of E-C news translation.
