This thesis looks into the English translation of introduction of calligraphy works from the perspective of communicative translation and conducts a case study of Chinese Calligraphy.Chapter 1 presents the background and the rationale for conducting this research-how Chinese calligraphy is viewed or appreciated in English-speaking world, and how it has been promoted overseas. Chapter 2 reviews recent researches on translation of Chinese calligraphy terms and texts at home and abroad was given. Chapter 3 is a brief introduction of Peter Newmark's classification of texts by their functions and his theory of semantic vs. communicative translation. Chapter 4 discusses the features, function as well as target readership of introductions of Chinese Calligraphy work, and how the theory of communicative translation can be applied in this area. Also in this chapter, examples of calligraphy introduction translation are given along with analysis of their communication effects. In conclusion, the author holds that translation of introductory texts on Chinese calligraphy should be translated in ways that agree with target readers'expectation, their knowledge base and habitual use of language. Translators should have the discretion to amend or adapt the original text to achieve this purpose.
