This thesis explores, through theoretical and experimental approaches, the influence of prepositional adverbial in Chinese on the performance of Chinese-English (CH-EN) simultaneous interpretation (SI). In addition, the thesis sets out to examine the feasibility of several interpretation tactics.Existing linguistic theories suggest that the adverbials in Chinese usually locate in the middle-section of the sentences, right before the verb. In the meantime, as illustrated by Daniel Gile's Effort Model theory, the propositional adverbials may consume the processing ability of interpreters, thus constitutes problem-triggers and bring down the overall interpretation quality. With regard to the characteristics of prepositional adverbial and simultaneous interpretation, interpreters have four responding tactics in their disposal:longer EVS, prediction, restructuring and syntactic linearity.Based on the above analysis, a comparative research is conducted, in which 9 amateur and professional interpreters from GSTI are divided into 3 groups. The aims of the experiment is to:1. Verify the impact of prepositional adverbial through quantitative and qualitative measures.2. Study the effect of each responding tactics.With the analysis the performance of interpreters, the following conclusions are reached:prepositional adverbials tend to undermine the performance of C-E simultaneous interpretation. Meanwhile, responding tactics such as prediction and restructuring can help the interpreters to effectively tackle the difficulties from prepositional adverbials.
