With the rapid development of medical technology and increasingly constant exchanges between China and the world,there has been a sharp rise in the demands for interdisciplinary medical practitioners with both profound medical knowledge and higher English level.Medical English course has been offered by many medical colleges and universities in China.Does the present medical English teaching meet the requirements of society and medical professionals? What are the needs of the medical students for medical English teaching?Under this circumstance,an investigation was carried out in Fujian Health College in a search for the problems of medical English curriculum and teaching.As one of the important branches of ESP,medical English course should be established on the basis of efficient needs analysis.Based on the theory of ESP and the needs analysis theory of Hutchinson & Waters and Dudley-Evans & St.John,the author aims to find out the target needs of medical professionals and learning needs of medical students respectively through questionnaire and interview.From the results,we can see that the medical practitioners' needs for English lie in mastering new technology,reading English medical literatures and writing academic essays or English abstracts for their essays.While the English skills that the medical students most desperate to improve are their listening and speaking ability.The results also revealed the fact that the present medical English course fall short of meeting the needs of students with various defects existing in the medical English curriculum,teaching model,course contents,time arrangement,textbook making,English teachers and evaluation methods.Finally,some concrete and feasible measures and suggestions are put forward on the basis of ESP needs analysis and the practical teaching situation in Fujian Health College.It is hoped that this study will provide some help and references for the medical English teaching reform of the college.
