A Study On The Structure Of “V You(?)VP” In Modern Chinese

"V you(?) VP" is one type of “V adverb VP "structure, which is a kind of common structure, also frequently used in the life.It often used for oral Chinese. "V you(?) VP"has been used for nearly a thousand years. As one of special grammatical structures in Chinese, linguists hold different views on it.At the same time, the research is not enough.Apparently, to do some systematic research is still very necessary.This paper is divided into six chapters.In the first chapter, we have made a sort of research on the structure of "V adverb VP" in the past, and made the research methods of this paper clear. We used construction grammar and three planes theory. Later, we described the source of the corpus, and got rid of the forms which is similar to "V you(?) VP".In the second chapter,"V you(?)VP"is subdivided into two categories of ten small classes by the perspective of syntactic function.If the structure represented the meaning of action is for positive,we called it"V you(?)VP"positive form,mainly have:"V+you(?)+V+'le(?)/guo(?)'","V+you(?)+modal verb+V","V+you(?)+V+de(?)","V+you(?)+V+de(?)+complement".If the structure represented the meaning of action is for negative,we called it"V you(?)VP"negative form,mainly have:"V+you(?)+mei(?)/meiyou(??)+V+complement","V+you(?)+bu(?)+V+object","V+you(?)+bu(?)+modal verb+V","V+you(?)+V+bu(?)+de(?)","V+you(?)+V+bu(?)+complement","V+you(?)+V+de(?)+bu(?)+complement".And in the actual discourse,from the perspective of semantic relations,"V you(?)VP"can be divided into complex sentences and single sentences.The complex sentences can be divided into"assumption","transition",the single sentences can be divided into"focus"and"topic".Because of the multilayer structure,some“V you(?)VP”have the same forms,but actually they are different.So we only can tell the structure by putting it into the context.It is quite difficult to classify its sentence pattern,so we may classify it into the special sentence.The third chapter,the paper discussed the syntactic function of "V you(?) VP" topic form. The topic form can be used as predicate, attributive, complement, separate sentence,also can serve as a part of complex clause. Verbs which can enter the structure are mostly single syllable verbs, the use of double syllable words is not much, multi syllable words can not appear in the structure.Furthermore, the written words are not suitable for the structure. These verbs are behavioral verbs, psychological verbs. The former V often is abare-verb, which can be followed by a modal word or a pause. The topic form can be used in declarative sentences, exclamatory sentences and interrogative sentences, but imperative sentences cannot be used.The fourth chapter, from the semantic perspective, in the topic form, the bare-verb V does not have the typical characteristics of the verb, which meanings are empty. The later V in VP acts as predicate center at the sentence level, which cannot be deleted. The former V and the later V has the same form, but has the different refer in grammar, that is the syntactic and semantic role is different. “V you(?)VP" topic form shows its : whether the subjective and objective conditions allow the occurrence of V, or if V is allowed to happen, its results can be occurres or not. At the same time, both positive and negative forms are also emphasized on VP. Between the topic form and the subsequent clauses,the logical relationships of causality, explanation,transition are exsited.The fifth chapter, from a pragmatic point of view, the former V is a topic.It weaken the declarative, while the denotational strengthened.It acts as a class action,and plays the starting role in speech. It is also the focus of the topic. The later V is the typical of the predicate, with declarative function.The composition of the verb phrase VP is the natural focus of the sentence, which conveys the new information. The positive forms are keeping with the expectations, while negative forms are not. The whole structure has the function of expressing subjective modality.The sixth chapter made a summary of "V you( ?)VP" structure, and talked the shortcomings of this paper.Also we have a lot of work to do in the future,if we make further research.
