The Freehand brushwork of Chinese traditional realistic painting derives from the traditional Chinese culture:the philosophy of Confucianism, Taoism and philosophy. Especially the philosophy of "harmony between man and nature" has the greatest impact on the Chinese painting, which also established the unique tone of "Freehand brushwork" in Chinese painting. Freehand brushwork, which is embedded in traditional Chinese painting, is not only contained in the average types of freehand painting including fine brushwork, but also has been integrated into the traditions of Chinese painting and became established in painting philosophy. Fine brushwork and Freehand are not two opposing systems, as the boundary between them, to a certain extent, has gradually receded and blurred. In essence, the common pursuit of fine brushwork and freehand brushwork is artistic conception. Today, Chinese painting is undergoing the process of integration and reconstruction of Chinese and Western elements, and is also trying to find its own footing. In such a situation, the philosophy of "Freehand" has become one of the key factors that leads to the modern forms of contemporary Chinese painting. Based on the analysis of "spirit of impressionism" in traditional Chinese realistic painting, the explanation of the elements of the painting lines and lines of "meaning", and the description of the intentions revealed in color, together with the analysis of the development of Chinese and Western cultures, this papers discusses the importance that contemporary painting has in continuing to keep the freehand brushwork as its essence in the era of integration of Chinese and western cultures.
