A Report On The Translation Of NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES DRIVER'S MANUAL (Excerpts) Guided By Skopos Theory

With the improvement of people's living standards and an increasing number of vehicles, it has been more and more important for the vehicle management and standard driving behavior. Thus, learning traffic rules of drivers contribute to a standard driving behavior, improvement of consciousness of safe driving, decrease in traffic accidents so as to form a safe and civilized driving atmosphere. Therefore, the author chooses to translate NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES DRIVER'S MANUAL, with the hope of knowing traffic rules in the New York State, learning and using the advantages in it for reference.This report first generally introduces the background and significance of the translation, describes the translation task including translation reasons and translation process. The manual is a training material for application for driving license, which is informative text. With the guidance of Skopos Theory of German functional school, the author conducts the translation in accordance with the three rules of Skopos Theory, realizing a connection between theory and practice. The report is based on NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES DRIVER'S MANUAL, analyzes cases respectively from word and sentence. The author, mainly with the discussion of amplification, omission a nd replacement, explores the translation strategies of pronoun and proper noun. At the same time, the author analyzes the translation strategies and detailed ways of dealing with simple sentence and compound sentence. Moreover, the translator discovers that great difference exists in the expression of texts similar to the driver's manual. In the process of translation, the author takes different translation strategies ranging from different state conditions, expression habit to others. On the basis of being loyalty to the original text, the version should be smooth, concise and objective. Finally, the author makes conclusion for this translation, hoping provide some reference to the text of this category.
